Gamma-butyrolactone (often abbreviated as GBL; according to IUPAC nomenclature: oxolan-2-one, ) is an organic chemical compound from the lactone group of substances. It is mainly used as a solvent in industry and as a starting material for the production of pharmaceuticals and chemicals. In addition, it serves as a precursor of the narcotic GHB. It is a colorless liquid with a faint odor at room temperature. Its viscosity is relatively low and comparable to that of water.
GBL is a widely used solvent in industry and is also used as a paint, graffiti and nail polish remover. Because it is irreplaceable to the chemical industry, it has not been classified as an illegal narcotic, unlike GHB. Since the ban on GHB (liquid ecstasy), it has also been used as a drug and serves as a basic ingredient for the production of GHB. Compared to GHB, it has to be dosed much lower to have the same effect. A typical party dose is therefore 1 to 2 ml. It causes a faster onset of action than GHB and must be more diluted. Undiluted consumption will affect the gullet, stomach and intestines. Safer-use initiatives therefore usually recommend a dilution of 1:100 to 1:300.
