Flunitrazepam can only act on neurons whose GABA receptors are activated by GABA at this time. Unlike barbiturates, which cause chloride influx independently of GABA, it has a lower risk of respiratory depression. However, benzodiazepine abuse can occur, as the active substance leads to habituation relatively quickly.
