Modafinil is a drug used to treat narcolepsy. It was developed together with adrafinil in France in the 1980s. It is the main metabolite of adrafinil; adrafinil thus represents a prodrug of modafinil. Both substances belong to a group of psychostimulant drugs that differ significantly from amphetamines in their molecular structure. Modafinil was marketed exclusively by the former pharmaceutical company Cephalon (now Teva) until 2011. Now it is also available as a generic. It is approved in Germany for the treatment of excessive sleepiness occurring in the context of narcolepsy.
In 2011, following a safety evaluation process, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended a restriction of marketing authorization because the benefit/risk ratio of the active ingredient is no longer considered favorable for the following conditions:
- Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) with excessive sleepiness despite adequate nCPAP therapy
- Moderate-to-severe chronic shift-worker syndrome with excessive sleepiness in patients on night shift rotation (SWSD) when other sleep hygiene measures have not resulted in improvement.
In contrast, in the U.S., approval continues for the treatment of excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, or chronic shift worker syndrome.
You should only use Modafinil if there is a medical reason for it.
